Meet Juan Lazo
Juan was born and raised in Peru. His father,
Leonidas L a z o Pancorbo, was a former
Peruvian A i r Force
Officer and college
professor, w h i l e his mother, Matilde
Valdivia de Lazo, is a former educator
and political leader. She was mayor of a
town called Chosica, in the foothills near
Lima. She founded and directed a school
for poor children in the same town.
As noted earlier, Juan graduated
with h o n o r s from the San
Antonio A b a d University’s
Facult y of Administration
and Tourism. His thesis, a
paper which focused on
sustainable tourism to
protect the Urubamba
River, has received
rave reviews both
na tional ly a n d
internationally,which
has led to Juan receiving

invitations to lecture at many different universities, including the University of North Carolina’s acclaimed Institute of Latin American Studies.
Since 1986, Juan has led hundreds of guided tours and treks throughout Peru, including treks to
the Vilcabamba Cordillera region, located in Peru’s Southern Andes. Additionally, he has also conducted cultural tours to Peru’s Southern Coast through
the Peninsula of Paracas and the Nazca
Lines, as well as tours and treks to such places as the city of
Arequipa, Colca Canyon, Titicaca Lake, the ancient Inca Trail to
Machupicchu , and to the Amazon
area, to name just a few. During the early 1990s, to broaden his professional tourism experience, Juan traveled extensively throughout
Europe and worked as a river rafting guide in the
Spanish Pyrenees and the Austrian Alps.
A few of Juan’s most notable awards and honors are listed below:
2000, Best German Speaking Tour Guide, Cusco, Peru
2002, Golden Chakana Award; Best Tour Leader, the Professional Tour Guide’s
Association of Cusco.
2003, Elite Traveller Magazine, Best tour Guide; Machu Picchu
Additionally, Juan was selected as a consultant and advisor for a number of documentaries about Peru, including the television documentary called
“Paucartambo Inca River “ in 1986 an a documentary on Inca roads in South America produced by the National geographic Society in 1999.
